The 1999 Toyota Corolla petrol engines are all fuel injected, in-line, four cylinder units of 1332cc, 1398cc, 1587cc or 1598cc displacement with double overhead camshaft and 16 valves. All engines are normally aspirated, with the 1.4L and 1.6L VVT-i engines. A 5- or 6-speed manual transmission were available, along with 3- or 4-speed automatic options.

The Toyota 2AZ-FE Engine is a 2.4 L (2362 cc) straight-4 piston engine uses an aluminum engine block with cast iron cylinder liners and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. The 2AZ-FE Engine features slant-squish combustion chambers, offset cylinder and crank centers, and the VVT-i continuously variable intake valve timing system.
