2002 BMW E39 540i Owner Manual Maintenance and Replacing Parts Guide
The BMW E39 540i was initially powered by the 210 kilowatt (282 hp) 4.4 litre M62B44 V8. In 1998, the 540i received the further upgraded M62TUB44, including within it the VANOS system and an electronically actuated throttle. In 2002, the 540i was slightly boosted to 290 hp (V8 32V) for year 2002.

The BMW 523i is driven by a respectable 2.2-litre 170bhp six-cylinder engine (M52TU) produces 147mph maximum speed and 190bhp power, featured an aluminum alloy block with Double-VANOS (variable intake AND exhaust cam timing) for additional improvements in torque delivery, economy and emissions. The BMW 523i also features DSC (Dynamic Stability Control’ system) which include Brake Standby, Rain Brake Support, Hill Start Assist, Fading Compensation and Soft Stop.
