The VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is a valvetrain system developed by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke internal combustion engine. The i-VTEC (intelligent-VTEC) introduced continuously variable camshaft phasing on the intake cam of DOHC VTEC engines. This engine was first appeared on Honda’s K-series four cylinder engine family in 2001.
The 2008 Honda Accord comes with two engine models, the 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine. The base engine is a 2.4-liter i-VTEC inline four-cylinder powerplant in the LX Sedan and LX-P Sedan. With 177 horsepower, this engine delivers an increase of 7% in horsepower compared to its predecessor. While accord Sedan and Coupe V-6 models equipped with 5-speed automatic transmissions are powered by a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 that is the most powerful engine ever offered in a Honda vehicle.
